Quick bump: Crossing the line

The International Criminal Court (ICC) just issued arrest warrants for the top leadership of both Hamas and Israel. It claims these leaders are all responsible for war crimes in the current conflict. It is doing exactly as it should.

There is no question that war crimes have been committed by both sides, in particular the killing of thousands of children. This isn't about equivalence. We don't need to decide which side is worse. This is a much simpler question: who has broken the rules of war? Who has crossed the line? If you are paying attention to the conflict, and are remotely fair-minded, it is obvious both sides have committed numerous war crimes.

The civilized world created an international framework for prosecuting war crimes to discourage future violence. If we stop adhering to that framework, we stop discouraging violence. We must not play favorites with war crimes.
